Amazing Fungi

About the “Amazing Fungi” Series…

Audrey’s first acquaintance with fungi was during her trip to Italy in 2019,  where she met some hikers in the Sicilian hills looking for edible mushrooms. Filled with curiosity, she later watched a documentary on fungi and receiving photos of beautiful fungi found in our very own Penang Hill from a hiker friend, sparked off her interest to embark on painting this subject.

Since her discovery of this medium in 2019, she has learnt to harness the power of contemporary batik painting techniques, constantly experimenting with ways of layering, “bubbling” and “cracking” of colors to bring to life the intricate forms and vibrant hues found within the fungal kingdom of her latest series. In a world where fungi often go unnoticed, Audrey seeks to create an awareness of their vital role and profound impact on balancing our ecosystem. Her surreal interpretation of this connection is seen in the floating cultural elements such as the “wau” (the kite) in Serenity and the indigenous tribal tattoos and hornbills of East Malaysia in Tranquility, against an imagined forest backdrop.

This series not only attempts to showcase the depth of what could be created beyond the traditional batik techniques but is an open invitation to further explore, appreciate and protect the remarkable fungi that shapes our world in ways we perhaps, have yet to fully understand…and hope you’ll do the same with this homegrown medium of art called contemporary fine art batik.
