ABOUT Audrey Yoke-Lin Lim

Audrey fell in love with sports at a young age of 12 while being a Bukit Bintang Girls’ School student. Her passion coupled with talent led her to proudly represent Malaysia in two South East Asian Games in the 80’s.With great potential to excel in a dynamic environment, she was awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Youth & Sports to major in Physical Education (Allied Health) in the USA in 1987. She also pursued a LCCI Higher Diploma in Advertising,Marketing & PR and an MBA from Oklahoma City University as a working adult. As life went by, the next 25 years of her life was centered within the corporate and business sectors ranging from the fields of Finance & Investment, Communications and lastly to Advertising Film Production before she prematurely retired.

The demanding work life has never stopped her from setting her heart on pursuing new challenges. It was through a change in family life that prompted her to endeavor in the art of painting. As a person filled with spiritual conviction, Audrey believes that this journey in painting is a path guided by the Divine and through this “gift” she began to realise that painting was her solace and therapy which added a different dimension to her life. Audrey found lost love in a new form filled with the same energy and spirit of the athlete she was. To her wonder, she began to translate strokes and colours with a fresh set of zeal, will power and flair into the art pieces you see today.

As I attempt to tell my story, many faces (phases) of life come to mind. My journey of art began with the will to pick myself up and hurdle through the fate of an untied nuptial knot. I began to see life in a different light and appreciate the colours that have always been there which went unseen.

Being an artist has made me see with more clarity that any uncertainty may be a certainty after all; very much like starting on an empty canvas. With every stroke that I execute, my mind transcends the limits of time and space. Through those strokes, lines emerge translating my inner thoughts and feelings onto the canvas.

As I paint I relish the transfer of energy and freedom reminiscent of my past athletic prowess and evidently reflected in the strong and almost uncontrollable parabolic lines you may see in most of my paintings.

It is not my intention to have any particular interpretation when I start to paint but merely an open invitation to see what you can see or what you want to see in my art (however I was advised to put titles to them). I am more than happy to receive critique of one’s

interpretation of my abstractness as I truly believe that looking at things through a different lens will lend a fresh perspective to the traces of my life which helps to solidify me further as the artist I desire to become. My discovery with you would certainly be an exquisite addition to this journey of art-spiration.

For each piece may imprint a face of sort; to me “Faces” is a step in allowing my inhibitions and joy to emulsify as one art piece which hopefully will intrigue you in some ways. Painting has been a savior to restore my fragmented spirit. It gives me a sense of focus and a different adrenalin rush every time I begin to hold my palette knife, transforming the unknown to a more precise visual treat which gives me a sense of calmness.

Working on “Faces” has indeed been a joyful ride although at times laced with anxieties of achieving perfection. It has also been a self healing journey filled with surprises, limitless artistic possibilities and discovery that my track of life will continuously begin with every piece I illustrate on the canvas.

With much gratefulness,

Audrey Lim
